I believe in going out and supporting smaller bands as they come through on tours. Unfortunately very few come my way up here in the north but I still get to support them by interviewing them. Like with TEARS OF MARTYR. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

Every band has to introduce their music to new people. What is it that you want people to get from listening to you guys?
-Our songs kickstart from our hearts, and mostly circle around feelings, that’s a main topic for our lyrics. We have always tried to tell our stories in such a way that they thrill the listener. So in a certain way it’s like sitting and watching a movie (we often get comments that our music seems to be part of a film score). If the audience enjoys our movie when the lights are finally on, then we are happy.

How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music?
-The band was formed back in the mid-nineties and at the beginning we were doing a more ‘thrashy’ sound, but very soon we felt the need to open different channels that would allow to tell our stories in a better way as we added piano arrangements and a female voice. Those new features gave us the chance to express ourselves more freely, so the name came pretty easy for us. Tears of Martyr perfectly represented our non-conformism against all what it was supposed to control our future, sometimes in an intangible way.

Everybody is influenced by certain things. What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of music you play? What inspires you today?
-That is a very complicated question to answer. What we are now, is the result of a long evolution throughout the years. Into Metal, I started listening to bands like Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio, Accept, then came Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura, Type of Negative and so on… all of them were our favorite bands at the time Tears of Martyr was created. For me, nowadays, I feel more inspired from what I read or watch, although lately I find very entertaining the proposal from Animal as Leaders.

When you formed did you do so with the intent of knowing what to play or did you do so from the point of having a band name and then picking a sound? How did you settle on the name/sound combo?
-Well, like I said before it was kind of a 50/50 process, so it all developed quite
natural for us.

I believe that digital is killing the album format. People’s changing habit of how they listen to music will result in there being no albums. Is here anything good with releasing single tracks only?
-Music business has changed, that’s a fact. We are a band that enjoys the concept of working in a complete album. In any case is a positive thing to have different options, and bands could choose if the want to express themselves in a ’single’ style or with full album depending on the convenience of the moment. Final word in the hands of the audience. TEARS OF MARTYR

What part does art-work and lay-out play when you release new recordings? How do you best catch people’s attention?
-A big one indeed. We try music/lyrics/art to have a strong relationship. I believe our songs have a high visual weight, nevertheless, lyric writing process is very visual for me. Again, we try to convey our stories in a way they effectively reach the audience. So if you take as an example our last album “Tales”, the cover art will give you some clues of what you can find inside. All the protagonists are gathered there, presenting themselves, somehow inviting you to share their stories.

Has social media re-written the rules on how to promote your music? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way?
-Yeah, that is something that has completely changed in the last few years. A band should be in every possible online platform, or they can pass unnoticed! A bit overwhelming…

When you play in a band, does that make you feel like you are a part of a scene, of something bigger and grander?
-I see the term “scene” as something more local, as to when many bands are formed in the same place and time. But you do feel indeed part of something bigger, part of some people who feels a truly love for what Metal means. Is something maybe a bit hard to be described just with words.

How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
-Yes! we are a band that really enjoys playing live. We think is the best way to share your music, being there close to the fans. We will start our first long European Tour on May 2016, touring with Swiss guys from November-7 in a tour across Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and Switzerland.

What will the future bring?
-We are Tears of Martyr, so we have been always fighting against with what the cruel Gods may have written for us! We expect to play second half of 2016 as much as possible and to finalize our new material to be able to start the recording of our third
album to be released next year! Stay tuned to www.tearsofmartyr.com & www.facebook.com/tearsofmartyr for more important news to come very soon!
