TERRA TERATOS has a very harsh black metal sound that I am quite fond of. Sure, the symphonic grandeur of bands like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth can be enticing but give me the primitive, almost industrial noise of this band and you find me in bliss. ©2015 Anders Ekdahl
How important is the band’s name in giving out the right kind of vibe?
-The name is put into a personal associative array and influences expectations of the listener, tunes such expectations to the necessary harmony, speaks something about the author… However, whatever sophisticated the name is, if individual associations and expectations of the listener do not coincide with the real effect from acquaintance with the band, inevitably a feeling of discrepancy of something promised and something finally obtained appears, as well as skeptical and negative emotions in respect to the band. However, I believe, such options of succession of events are vital for the projects (bands) having too pathetic or ridiculous names, but relatively poor music and lyrics.
What was it that made you want to do TERRA TERATOS?
-Imagine someone looking through his or her photo album to recollect something from depths of the memory, but I have this project for this purpose. A lot of things about the Terra Teratos have been created basing on dreams, images, meditation things, and traveling, both physical and astral. I am motivated by a desire to imprint my experience, observations, and revelations in an art form, to express my impressions and moods by sound, to remember and recollect, addressing to my project.
What is your definition of black metal? What is black metal to you?
-Black Metal for me is a musical and poetic demonstration of the Death cult. It is necessary to understand that it is not so much about literal perception of the Death, but the Death as a symbol of total transformation, a transgressive act of coming to an essentially other level, a ruthless separator in all its aspects.
Certainly, with such approach the sense of existence of this genre is beyond a pure art. As Hermann Hesse put this in his “Demian”, “The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world.” (c) A genuine transformation demands a never-ending staying in the bifurcation points which replace each other. That also caused praising of Darkness, Evil, Chaos, War, total correlation with an archetype of the Devil, immersion into the images being the most frightening for an ordinary person – that is, everything, for what we honor the real Black Metal so much, and what the Black Metal really is…
When you work more with soundscapes than with actual songs how do you arrange the tracks?
-It is rather difficult to explain, since this occurs automatically, as if you cook a habitual dish and you simply feel what ingredients are required, in what proportions, what is not enough in this particular case.
Where do you find your inspiration to create?
-Dreams, books, visions, magic experience, practical openings, reflections, internal needs, and contemplation of the world around, the aspects interesting to me…
How important is the graphic side of TERRA TERATOS? How much thought goes into art work etc.?
-The issued Terra Teratos project booklets are very ascetic; they bear no secret signs or independent ideas, other than the general message of albums. They are just consistent, and this consistency is my only requirement to myself when making the graphic design.
Do you find that there is a greater freedom in working with digital than working with physical?
-In noise genres, in ambient – it is unconditional.
Are there any limitations to digital? Can you do everything you like?
-If you try to imitate a live analog sound of some instruments by digital means, you never get an absolute identity; but I believe, it is just ridiculous to anticipate a similar identity from digital music. Concerning other things, I never faced any restrictions, but some inconveniences. I need a lot of time to select samples, process them, bring to an appropriate sounding; I need skills and a huge patience.
Is there a scene to speak of for a band like TERRA TERATOS? Where do you fit in?
-Frankly speaking, I do not track such things. My project is an especially underground one, this is my fundamental choice, and I do not pay attention to PR and promotion, I do not communicate with my colleagues on a genre, I stand aside the race and competitiveness in such art.
What does the future hold?
-Recently I presented a new EP “Ambrosia”, probably one more small work will be presented shortly from the ones already almost complete… In general, the Terra Teratos exists without time frames – I do not set objectives and I do not make plans… Besides the TT, I have two other projects, and now they in a priority, but the material for the TT appears by itself – without fixed terms. While something is arising, the project will exist.
