THE ADVENT EQUATION isn’t your typical Mexican (if there is such a thing) metal band. It got me thinking that there might be more to this band than meets the eye. To which I had to interview them. Anders Ekdahl ©2013

Is it a disadvantage to come from Mexico when you plan on having an international career?
-As with every career, it requires 100% of you; thinking international helps us have a better vision of our music, not only as a metal band but as musicians as well.

I can’t really say that I know of that many Mexican metal bands yet I understand that there is a great interest for metal. What is it like to be a metal band in a country mostly known for its drug wars and murder rates?
-There are several great metal bands in Mexico and obviously one of the biggest challenges that we have, is to break the prejudices of this country, while we do have some crime, drugs and murders that unfortunately have affected our international perception in a negative way, Mexico also has great music and many other forms of artistic expression.

When you write songs that are between 5 and ten minutes long how do you know when the song is done?
-On every song we try to tell a part of a story, which leads us to an infinite fan of possibilities, we think that every song has a particular way of telling you this story, and it just happens.

Why do you write so long songs? What is the purpose of it? What is wrong with 3 minutes songs?
-Well, we think that there is nothing wrong with short songs, as long as they allow you to fully understand what the artist wanted to share; in our case, and for this album, we find long songs more suitable since we don’t feel forced to cut or miss any important fraction of the song.

When you write these long songs how do you fit the lyrics into it all? Do you write small poems to go with each song or what?
-Lyrically and musically, the album goes around an existential theme throughout the songs, exploring the mind’s journey through loss, pain and death.
Usually the lyrics are written first and the song takes shape around it, take the lyrics as short stories that are brought together by the music.

What would you say has been your greatest influences in shaping THE ADVENT EQUATION? What makes THE ADVENT EQUATION the Advent Equation?
-We can describe its meaning by looking at the words individually, with ADVENT we have something big, a change that will occur, that being one side of it, and on the other one we have the word EQUATION which speaks of balance, equality that each member brings . We have a multitude of influences, just to mention a few, Porcupine Tree, Tool, Cynic, Camel, Pink Floyd and melodic metal in general. Each one coming from different backgrounds musically speaking, we have a wide array of possibilities to shape a song.

There used to be a time when there was a difference being signed to a bigger label as opposed to being on an underground one. Is there that difference today?
-Going back to previous questions, as in our country, rock and metal are not commercially supported as many musicians would like, we don’t remember a Mexican band being with a big label, but still this drives us on doing things better, being more competitive, and to keep the dream alive. So to answer your question, we can’t make a precise judgment, since we haven’t had the big label experience yet.

What are your wishes for this new album? What do you want it to do for you?
-We look forward to promote our music in 2013, across our country and wherever our music can be heard. Working with renowned personnel like Alberto “Charles”, Jens Bogren and Colin Marks, has helped us to not limit ourselves and go as far and as professional as possible.

How do you intend to promote the band the best possible way?
-Online promotion plays an important role in this matter, and the most important factor in this, is general press, that has given us several positive reviews, that drive us to keep going forward and motivate us to keep doing things the way we are.

What else do you see in the future?
-To continue our story, Limitless Life Reflections being the first of many chapters in our lives. We would like to thank anyone that took the time to read this interview, and invite you to listen to our music, visit our social media pages, and please be more than welcome to contact us.
