THEATRES DES VAMPIRES have been going for what seems like an aeon. If you haven’t checked out this Italian goth metal band then the time is now. Anders Ekdahl ©2016
You have one of these names that does not really tell what kind of metal you play. How hard was it to come up with the name?
-First of all thank you for your interview.
The name “Theatres des Vampires” was inspired by a fictional location created by Gothic fantasy writer Anne Rice of The same name. Rice’s Theatres des Vampires is a Parisian theatre in which vampires pretend to be mortal actors,
Their performances consisting of the feeding on mortals disguised as part of a play and staged in front of human Audiences. The location is mentioned in several of Rice’s books, including Interview With the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. We all have a great passion for vampirism and I think our kind of gothic metal is perfectly linked with this attitude…in all our albums we create an obscure atmosphere…sometimes more symphonic..sometimes more violent but you can always feel a melancholy that drives our songs… vampires are not only connected with the dark scene that I also love totally..
Could you give us a short introduction to the band?
-Theatres des Vampires was formed in 1994 . as I told you before all the members since the beginning expressed a fascination with vampires and anything connected to them. During our career, we were first primarily influenced by symphonic black metal, but later tended to including Differing influences, including: classical music, opera, darkwave, deathrock, gothic rock and several industrial subgenres. Throughout this stylistic deviation, a few characteristics of our band’s music have remained consistent; melancholic atmospheres and dark lyrics, vocal stylings akin to gothic metal, and our vampiric image. Since 2004 I remained the solo vocalist and front of the band.
Our 10th album “Candyland” will be released via Scarlet records on October 14th 2016.
What would you say have been the single greatest influence on your sound?
-One of the most inspiration for us, especially in the past, were the horror movie soundtracks and classic music..
What is the scene like in your area? Do you feel that you are a part of a scene?
-We have really great talented band here in Italy also if metal scene has its difficulties to grown up in the real way but the organizators and the bands always do their best to realize it..the problem is the commercial music that is waisting the brains of all the new generations…I really hope in a better future for metal in our country cause lots of people deserve it and lots of people work hard for it. We are surely part of that, I’m Italian and I’m a metal head as well so..here I am.we love our country, ..most of our tours are outside Italy but we play also here when possible.
Something I have often wondered about is if you feel that you are part of something bigger and greater when you play in a band, that you are part of a movement sort of?
I do not feel better than anyone, I feel proud of what we realized after 22 years on the road with Theatres des Vampires, I feel proud of what we achived and of our fans all over the world… I also feel lucky and grateful to still have the chance to play my music all aroud.
What I really like is to meet other artists and musicians when we are on tour, it’s beautiful cause we always share the same passion so..in this meaning..yes, it’s beautiful to be part of this world.
When you play the sort of music you play I guess you cannot have birds and bees on the cover of your album? What is a great album cover to you?
-Ahahah..well, it could be an idea for the next album! pink Bees everywhere!
We really take care about the image, for me it is strictly connected with our sound so, our album cover must follow the attitude of the album. I personally love both our last albums cover..Moonlight waltz and the upcoming album Candyland..they’re both obscure ad with a strong image.
Abouth other band I loved the dimmu borgir one : spiritual black dimension. But lots of album cover in metal genere are simply amazing!
What is your opinion on digital verses physical? Is digital killing music?
-Now digital music is the main part of music system so we just have to accept it. It gives the chance to lot of people to share their music all around…personally I love physical one…and this is a very difficult discussion but… when digital is not pirate..well I think it is good.
What kind live scene is there for bands like yours?
-We have lots of big festival all around the world , not necessary only gothic metal…some metal festival can have different kind of genere in different days…we also organize tours in Europe, latinoamerica, Russia…there is a lot to do.
When you play live is it a happening or do you see it more as a party?
-When we play on stage we give to our fans our best..it’s very important for us cause they deserve the best..it’s not obvious that someone loves your music, we always thanx our fans for that..we had the chance to travel all around the world to play our music because of them…we take it really seriously cause we really believe in what we do and in our music…so the party starts when we jump off the stage at the end of the gig and people share their emotions with us, drinking beers together . this is what I call party.
What would you like to see the future bring?
-We want to share our music all around..so thousand og gigs I suppose!
In blood we lust!
