THINK OF A NEW KIND (T.A.N.K.)

With so many cool bands out there to check out I offer you some minor guidance by introducing you to THINK OF A NEW KIND (T.A.N.K.). Anders Ekdahl ©2019

Let’s start with your latest recording. When you look back at it now what kind of feelings do you have for it?
-It’s been a very long process, as we were in the studio in January 2018! We took a lot of time because we truly believed in this record. So once everything was recorded, we went in another studio for a new mix and master, to have en even more massive sound. Then, we had to search for a good label company that would help us promote this album. The wait was long, but worth it, as we finally signed a deal with Verycords. They helped us developed our concept and gave us the idea of the Comic Book, to introduce it. The path was scattered with trials, but now that it is out, we are more than proud of our new baby!

I am fascinated by band names. What was it that made you settle on the one you have and what does it mean to you?
-We have a long story with that name. When we released our first album, we were known in France as TANK. We chose to use that name as an acronym for Think of A New Kind. With this new record, we abandoned the acronym to use our full name. It’s a way to affirm our identity and bring something fresh. New album, new concept, new logo, new label, and… almost a new name! These cryptic words, Think of A New Kind, are an invitation to reconsider what you think, to try to understand people who thinks differently. We have to be careful when we judge somthing too quickly. The ability to reconsider a judgement is something that woud ease the communication and avoid misunderstandings.

What does it mean to you that there are people out there that actually appreciate and look forward to what you are doing?
-It’s probably the best reward we can hope! We are doing this since 10 years, we did everything on our own, we are animated by passion. Having people loving what we do is one of the best thing that can happen to us. Fans are the reason why we keep doing that, years after years. We feed on their good vibes. They are our fuel!

How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-With this new records and its concept, image is as important as music. So here is the concept:
It’s a dystopia inspired by pop culture and post apocalyptic science fiction where big companies, corrupt governments and extremist groups, gathered under the banner of The Entropy, have established a true climate of terror, where all forms of creative expression and protest culture are strictly forbidden. Facing them, a group of rebels known as The Essence have decided to fight this madness. They work in the shadow to gather the wandering souls ready to fight for their freedom, learning lessons from past mistakes. As the voice of The Essence, Think of A New Kind is trying to keep hope alive and to build up the resistance.
The story lives in the lyrics but not only. It lives through the artwork, the music videos, on stage and even in a comic book! That is why we are working hard on our visual identity.

I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-Well thanks! We worked with Rusalka design (aka Ludovic Cordelières) who has already worked with us for the 2 previous albums. He is part of the team, now. And he has been very important. He helped us visualize this new universe we were creating. One of his biggest contribution is that he created the bad guys: The Putrids. We can see them in the artwork, the comic book and in our latest music video, “The Pledge”. But there are lotst of details in the artwork that will help fully understand the concept and the story.

We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
-Social medias are usefull to promote the band but the problem is that there are more and more people, more and more medias, and if you want to be noticed in that ocean, you need to pay for commercials. The prices are getting higer and higer, and once again, everything is a question of money…
And if you want to get really big, you also need to post something everyday… But we don’t want to be controled by social medias. And when you think about it, it was even better when we were young : our idols were surrounded by mystery, informations about them were rare and it was a special pleasure to find one !

When you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community? That you belong to something that gives meaning to your life?
-I think the best part of being a metal musician is that we have the chance to go on stage, scream and shout at the face of crazy metalheads that are actually happy about it! It’s a communion with the crowd, it feels like we are united to express our anger. It’s a healthy way to channel your rage and violence, it’s one of the best therapy I know!

When you are in the middle of it do you notice what state our beloved music scene is in? Is the scene healthy or does it suffer from some ailment?
-Local scene would need more support. Usually, metalheads are passionate poeple, they love to defend their beloved music style. But too many of them only go to big shows or festivals. Remember that each big bands you love comes from a local scene somewhere and that they might not be there without the support of their early fans…

How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
-We had the chance to tour in Europe with bands such as Soilwork, Hatesphere and lately with Joey Jordisson’s Sinsaenum. It’s not only the chance to meet great people that have inspired us since our youngest years but to learn from them. Being on tour is always an amazing school of life as you also learn lots of things about your bandmates! A new level of intimacy ! 🙂 Of course we would be more than happy to go back on tour, to defend our new album on stage, everywhere, that’s why we are looking for good opportunities but this Corona shitstorm is not helping us….

What will the future bring?
-Our plan is to shoot other music videos, to complete the story we started with The Pledge and as I was saying, we hope to be back on stage as soon as possible.
And eventually, we are thinking of a way to extend the universe of Ideals Will Remain, maybe with EPs, just like video games add-ons, so stay tuned.
