TYTUS

I know that the Italian music scene is almost non appreciative of its many cool metal bands. But that only means that the rest of us has to prove them wrong onbe band a ta time, starting withTYTUS. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

Was it hard to come up with a name? What does the name mean to you? How important is it to have the right name?
-THE NAME IS VERY IMPORTANT. BEFORE PICTURES, BEFORE MUSIC ITSELF, YOUR NAME IS WHAT PEOPLE GO THROUGH FIRST, GOT TO BE COOL. IT WAS NOT PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT TO DECIDE. SOMEONE SAID “WHAT ABOUT “TYTUS ?”AND EVERYONE WAS LIKE “YEAH! THIS IS IT”. IT DOES NOT HAVE A STRICT MEANING BUT WE THINK IT RECALLS A KIND OF ATMOSPHERE WITH WHICH OUR MUSIC PERFECTLY FITS IN.

Who would say have laid the foundation for the kind of sound you have? Who are your heroes musically and what have they meant to you personally and to the sound of your band?
-DEFINITELY HEAVY METAL AND HARD ROCK BANDS FROM ’80S AND ’70S, LIKE IRON MAIDEN, EARLY METALLICA, JUDAS PRIEST, THIN LIZZY AND MANY OTHERS . BUT EVERYONE OF US LISTEN TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT MUSIC AND I THINK THIS SEEPS THROUGH OUR STUFF. I PERSONALLY LOVE PINK FLOYD AND TRY TO GIVE A SCENT OF PSYCH TO EVERYTHING I PLAY. BANDMATES ARE NOT ALWAYS HAPPY ABOUT THAT (lough)

When you play slow do you have to think differently arranging the music than if you play faster and vice versa?
-I GUESS YOU HAVE TO. BUT I DON’T THINK IT IS SOMETHING YOU COLDLY DECIDE IN ADVANCE. IT IS JUST PART OF THE PROCESS: THE RIGHT FEEL FOR THE SONG JUST COMES NATURALLY WHILE PLAYING IT OVER AND OVER, ADDING OR CHANGING THINGS UNTIL THE MOMENT WE LOOK EACH OTHER AND SAY “OK. THIS IS HOW IT HAS TO BE!!!”

Will your music work in a live environment? What kind of stage environment would best suit your music; a big stage or a small club?
-WE PLAYED EVERY SIZE OF VENUE AND FROM THE FEEDBACK WE HAVE FROM THE CROWD APPARENTLY OUR MUSIC WORKS GOOD EVERYWHERE. BIG CLUBS OR OUTDOOR EVENTS ARE BETTER FOR SOUNDS BUT I LIKE A LOT MORE SMALL , SMOKEY PLACES WHERE YOU PLAY ALMOST AMONG THE CROWD AND YOU CAN REALLY FEEL PEOPLE SWEATING AROUND YOU!

Everybody seems to be disappointed with something once they have released a recording. What would you have liked done differently the last time around?
-WELL, PERSONALLY I WOULD HAVE PREFERED A ROUGHER, DIRTIER SOUND, WITH SOME MORE BASS TO MAKE IT A BIT WARMER. BUT I MUST SAY I AM PRETTY HAPPY ABOUT THE FINAL RESULT WE HAVE.

Is it hard to reach out to all those that might be interested in your music? What alleys have you used to get people familiarized with your band?
-IT IS HARD, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. INTERNET HELPS A LOT TO SPREAD YOUR NAME WORLDWIDE AND A GOOD VIDEO COULD DEFINITELY HELP. STILL, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET THE RIGHT ATTENTION. I THINK THAT THE BEST THING IS THE GOOD OLD WAY: BEING KILLER PLAYERS AND GAIN FANS ONE BY ONE IN LIVE GIGS!!! THIS IS THE FUNNYIEST WAY, TOO!

What to you is a great front cover? What should a cover have to make it great?
-THE BEST COVERS HAVE THE RARE ABILITY TO TAKE YOU IMMEDIATELY INTO THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE ALBUM. I PERSONALLY LIKE A LOT THE ONES WITH DRAWINGS, WHICH CAN BE CONSIDERED SMALL PIECES OF ART IN THEMSELVES. IN THIS SENSE Graveyard’s “hisingen blues” ALBUM COVER, OR High on Fire’s “Lminiferous” HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED. GOOD PHOTO WORKS ARE GREAT TOO: FOR EXAMPLE The Clash’ s “London Calling” ALBUM COVER OR Pink Floyd’s “Ummagumma” ARE REAL KILLERS!!

Do you feel that you are part of a national scene? What is the climate for music in your country?
-MAINSTREAM MUSIC IN ITALY IS ALL MADE UP OF X FACTOR’S PUPPETS, ITALIAN POP, NEOMELODIC STUFF AND DINOSAURS, SO FORGET ABOUT IT. LUCKILY THE UNDERGORUND IS FULL OF VERY INTERESTING SITUATION, ESPECIALLY IN THE D.I.Y. ENVIRONMENT, WHERE ATTITUDE IN MUSIC (AND NOT THE GENRE OR SUBGENRE YOU PLAY) IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. BEING IT PLAYING MUSIC, RUNNING VENUES OR LABELS, PEOPLE DO THINGS OUT OF REAL PASSION, NOT FOR THEV MONEY, AND THIS KEEPS THE FIRE BURNING DESPITE EVERYTHING. IN THIS SENSE, YES, WE FEEL PART OF A NATIONAL SCENE, AND I AM PROUD OF IT.

How do one promote oneself the best possible way?
THIS IS VERY DIFFICULT TO ANSWER… IT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE, I GUESS. FROM OUR PART, AS I SAID, WE BELIEVE THAT A GOOD LIVE PERFORMANCE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. IF YOU PLAY GOOD AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU, THEY WILL SPREAD THE WORD TO THEIR FRIENDS AND THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN ANYTIME!

What does the future hold?
-I GUESS AT LEAST ONE MILLION BEERS! WE ARE ABOUT TO PACK OUR STUFF AND START ROAMING AROUND EUROPE IN A WHILE! STAY TUNED FOR MORE!
