UNGOLIANTHA

UNGOLIANTHA is another Ukraine band that are new to me. But given the track history of previous Ukraine bands I had to interview this lot too. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

You have one of these names that tells me that some thought has been involved in the choice. How hard was it to come up with the name?
-Actually, it wasn’t difficult. I used to read Tolkien at that time, and thought about different names for the band. From the rich professor’s world I have chosen the Ungoliant – an evil spirit in the form of a spider from “The Silmarillion”

Could you give us a short introduction to the latest album?
-Album`s name reflects the point, the heart of the band, because we had to pass through the death of the band, and through the chaos of uncertainty, line-up changings, and through the lot of years to make the album to appear on physical medias.

What would you say have been the single greatest influence on your sound?
-Are you talking about influence of different bands and different aspects?
Mainly, as a reference point we took the Emperor album “Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk”, also we orientated on sound of old-school Norway bands. And the famous at the Ukrainian scene musician and sound engineer Vladislav “Munruthel” Red’kin, former member of Nokturnal Mortum, helped us to bring it into appropriate form, and we are really thankful to him for the help. By the way for now he creates music in his own project Munruthel.

What is the scene like in your area? Do you feel that you are a part of a scene?
-For now the group is located in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, and there are lots of qualitative bands of different genres here. Do we feel us as a part of the scene? Perhaps yes.

Something I have often wondered about is if you feel that you are part of something bigger and greater when you play in a band, that you are part of a movement sort of?
-Something bigger and greater? It is challenging to answer this question. Maybe we are the ones who impress our thoughts through the music, and I don’t know if it is the part of something great. At least, I don`t believe in extraterrestrial forces, divided in black and white.

When you play the sort of music you play I guess you cannot have birds and bees on the cover of your album? What is a great album cover to you?
-You are right, bees and beards would be inappropriate
We like to see the next album`s cover similar to covers of such bands as Blasphemy , Beherit , Archgoat. Gloomy and hellish black and white cover.

What is your opinion on digital verses physical? Is digital killing music?
-Killing the music industry rather than music. It is unlikely that music can be killed in such simple way. I prefer to listen music from vinyl or CDs, but, unfortunately, for now I have no such possibility.

What kind live scene is there for bands like yours?
-Are you talking about live concert? Corpse-paint, thorns, wrath and musical tornado with a lot of blast-beats, poisonous scream and keyboards atmosphere.

When you play live is it a happening or do you see it more as a party?
-When we are at the scene – this is a happening, when we do our best. After that it can transform to a party.

What would you like to see the future bring?
-To continue to play our music, to perform live concerts as much as possible, and to visit places that we have not visited yet.
