VALHALLA LIGHTS sound like soemthing you’d want to experience before ragnarök happens. Anders Ekdahl ©2017
How important is the band’s name in giving out the right kind of vibe?
-Very Important! We wanted a name that was different and that felt powerful like our music and Valhalla is heaven its uplifting its where vikings who die in battle go. And The Pretty Pink Fairies was already taken 🙂
What was it that made you want to do the band?
-I’ve always wanted to front a rock band! And really push myself vocally. George, Brent and Deon have played together for years and I really respect them as musicians and loved their old band Fort. Everything just fell into place from the moment we all played together.
What is your definition of the music you play?
– I would define the music we play as rock. I struggle to define our music in detail so this is how a radio announcer from the UK defined our music.
I don’t think that I’ve come across another band quite like this before! … Valhalla Lights seem to have something pretty unique! … They have the ability to raise up the spirits with tracks like “Rise Above” “World On Fire” & “Escape The Silence!” … The ability to make your blood run colder than is good for you, with “Hammer The Witch!”
The ability to portray a form of tranquility, with “Beautiful! … Then to hit you with one of the most beautifully, sombre tracks that I have ever heard – “The One”! … For the pure emotive passions that this song instills in ones very soul, I’d put it on a par with Ozzy Osbourne’s “So Tired!”
Then the ability to stir the heart of every rocker, who still has a pulse, with “Darker Side Of Love”
How do you arrange the tracks? Is there a method to how you arrange the songs on a record?
-Mostly by feel… We all discussed in what order would the songs best flow and moved them around till we could all agree what felt best.
Where do you find your inspiration to create?
-Life, Other music and live shows.
How important is the graphic side of the band? How much thought goes into art work etc.?
-Very Important! for My Gracious Highway we realised a piece of artwork that represented the meaning of each song and at the end all joined together like a jigsaw puzzle which then became our album cover
Do you find that there is a greater freedom in working with digital than working with physical?
-We can certainly get our music out to the people easier but we still like to have physical copies for people to buy at live shows. Also radio still likes a physical copy sent out.
Are there any limitations to digital? Can you do everything you like?
-There’s no limitations to digital at all. In the contemporary music world there’s actually tremendous advantage.. Everything we want to do can be done and more.. There’s the best of both worlds.
Whilst selling a song, an ep, an album online, you also have the option to combine old school options of selling physical copies both online and at shows..and now vinyl has made a massive comeback. I think it’s perfectly possible to do everything you like, and more.
Is there a scene to speak of for a band like yours? Where do you fit in?
-Yes there’s a scene..wherever there’s lovers of heavy rock, there’s our place. For us, because we encompass a musical hybrid that doesn’t just appeal to 1 genre or style, we can fit into more people’s souls. If you want heavy rock? Done. You want psychedelic and ball tearing riffs?you got it. Want to hear Immensely powerful female vocals, consider it yours! Want to be taken on a melodic journey and never really like hopping off?
What does the future hold?
-We are going to continue writing, Keep playing as many live shows as we can and work towards an overseas tour.
