VOLKER is a new acquaintance for me. But I liked what I heard and wanted to interview them so here it is. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

What fascinates me is how you can still come up with new combinations of chords to make new songs and sounds that have not been heard before. What is it that fascinates you into coming up with new songs and albums?
-Thanx for the compliment. We just play what we want to, and let our inspiration speak.
The main goal for us when we started VOLKER was to play a kind of punchy and dark rock style music. I love all things about occultism , old horror movies and dark things, so we worked with this basis.

How is this new recording different from the previous? How do you take your sound one step further?
-We recorded in BUD RECORDS studio, he doesn’t work the same way than the previous one, but it was not a problem for us, anyway it’s good to work with different persons. We talk a lot with the engineer before the recording session in view to find the sound we wanted to: something modern but to too much. We wanted to keep a bit of vintage rock style sounding, we hope the result will please the audience.

When you write songs about the topics you do what kind of reactions do you get? How important is it to have a message in your lyrics? What kind of topics do each song deal with? Is there a red thread to the songs?
-Yes there is a red thread. All things linked to occultism always inspired me since a long time, since I was young, it inspires my own personal world. Lyrics are a mix of this and my humor, emotions and feelings. Death, magic, witchcraft, Monsters… this imaginary (or not) world always fascinated me.

Whenever I think of you I cannot help wandering off to different bands. What bands/sounds do you indentify with?
-Actually It’s very hard to answer, to be honest we try to find some band to compare, but in vain.
We could find some little similitudes with bands such as Djerv , My ruins, Otep or Misfits… but no one can say VOLKER is in the same style. Most of the time we find band more “metal”… or more “rock” but not with the same mix.
One thing is sure, we don’t belong to Epica, Within Temptation or Nightwish genre.

How did you go about choosing art work for this new album? What was important to have in it?
-Artwork is an important part for us, we searched for something that illustrate the whole lyrics. As we said, the main topics are the Death, sorcery, witches, voodoo things, the Night and all stuff linked to old horror movies …
For this artwork we worked around a character who could be a tortured and killed witch…
You can’t neglect the aesthetic of an Lp or CD, such as the aesthetic on stage, is really really essential for us, and it would be the same for all bands.

Something that scares me a bit is this I hear from more and more bands that they aren’t that bothered with art work anymore because people today download rather than buy physical. To me the whole point is to have art work that matches the music. I don’t know how many times I’ve been disappointed by weak art work to an otherwise cool album. What’s your opinion on this subject?
-You’re completely right… we share exactly the same point of view and the same disappointment.
We will continue to take a lot of attention to our artwork and give an importance to our physical items.

How do you come up with song titles? What do they have to have to fit the songs?
-Of course it’s important to fit with the songs! It also has to be catchy. It’s not as easy as you can think, sometimes it’s a real headache !!
We focus a lot on details, such as song titles.

I use Spotify and Deezer but only as compliment to buying CDS (it’s easier to just have your phone or pad when your out) but I fear that soon music as we know it will be dead and buried. What are your worries as a band?
-I don’t use those tools to listen to bands. I can understand it could be useful to discover a band, but when I like a band I like to support it and hold in my hand its release!

How much of a live band are you? How important is playing live?
-It’s just the main reason why we play music! On stage you can give life to your songs, and share them with others!

What lies in the future?
-Soon we will be on tour supporting MOONSPELL across France. We will thus promote the upcoming album ( it will be released early 2017), a video is also coming. We hope to be on stage a much as possible!
