YOUR SCREAMING SILENCE is a Russian band that I have fallen for. I wanted to know more about them. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
Let’s start with your latest recording. When you look back at it now what kind of feelings do you have for it?
-Our latest recording is the single “Time”. It was very meticulous work! During the recording process, we have changed the song tunes and lyrics several times. We spent a lot of time working on the song to make it sound right. And we think that eventually we have been able to succeed at it! Now when we look back at the song “Time” recording process we understand that this song is really significant for us. The band has been formed during the process of creating this song. It was the first track we started to work at as a band. For some reason, we suspended our work on this song for a while and released other singles. Now as the song “Time” is released we feel nostalgic about the past times when the band was formed.
I am fascinated by band names. What was it that made you settle on the one you have and what does it mean to you?
-We have settled on the band name “Your Screaming Silence” because it defines the main idea of our songs lyrics. Every song narrates short stories about some rough times people face sooner or later. For example, the song “Let It Go” touches on the topic of insult. The faster we forgive and let go our wounds the faster we start to approach happiness. The main idea of the song “Part Of The Plan” is that sometimes a man has to live through pain to purify himself and to find his own path. The most popular song for the moment is “You Don’t Care”. This song is about a misfit who survives through humiliation and mockeries and tries to stand out alone. Our acoustic single “The Final Round” is about betrayal in relationships. Our latest song “Time” is about people who live in past and are concerned about their future, so that they can’t enjoy the present. Figuratively speaking, “Your Screaming Silence” means a “cry from the depths” expressed in our lyrics and music.
What does it mean to you that there are people out there that actually appreciate and look forward to what you are doing?
-For any band or artist their audience is the main resource that defines their potential, popularity and success. Although there are some bands that declare their absolute independence on people’s opinion about their music, but we tend to believe that these statements are not much consistent with reality. As for us we feel blessed thinking that maybe at this moment somewhere on Earth there is a boy or a girl who is doing his/her thing listening to any of our records! And for sure we enjoy getting any feedback from people all around the world about their impressions on the music we release. It inspires us and gives us strength to move forward. And we are very thankful to the people who is interested in our work for that!
How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-To be memorable for people out there you should definitely work on your image. We place emphasis on the way we look on stage: our movements, clothes, hair etc. We always try to invent something interesting and impress people on live shows with our creativity and coordination. For example, an important attribute for our image is a badass handmade black box with band logo that we use on every single show as a podium for our vocalist! Also, talking about band’s image, we like the idea of “intelligent metal” without drug abuse and binge. We play heavy music and live a healthy lifestyle.
I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-Speaking more precisely, we have released 5 singles for the moment and an album is still in our plans as yet. However, we take seriously planning and creating an artwork for our every single being released. This is the only visual information that goes along with a music track when you listen to it in your iPod, smartphone, laptop or car audio system. A proper artwork will get a listener in the right mood for the song. As for our singles, we try our best to choose a consistent image for each of them, quite abstract so it will not limit the listener’s imagination but still comprehensible to give him some primary song impressions.
We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
-This is absolutely true: nowadays you don’t exist unless you have a social network account. In Russia, there is one more website you have to deal with – vk.com, which is the main social network around here. Despite of some evident benefits of social networks (such as fast and easy music distribution and promotion, interaction with the audience, events promotion etc.), they have also some side effects. People have lost considerably their interest in live music shows giving their preference to online streams or YouTube videos. Music perception has changed with the social network development. However, there are still more positive aspects in social networks rather than negative. As we said earlier, we enjoy very much to get any feedback about our music from our listeners all around the world. Some of them tell us their stories about the impact they had from our music, which helped them to go through hard times.
When you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community? That you belong to something that gives meaning to your life?
-Yes, absolutely! No matter where we play we always feel huge support from other musicians, not only the ones we met before but also random ones. It feels like you are a member of a secret order established by musicians to help and support each other! This is surprisingly odd because music environment is extremely competitive nowadays. Besides that, speaking about our band solely, only warm and friendly ambience between us moves the band forward to pursue our goals. This is the only way for us to commit ourselves to music and this is how music becomes a meaning of our lives!
When you are in the middle of it do you notice what state our beloved music scene is in? Is the scene healthy or does it suffer from some ailment?
-This is a really good and tough question. Music scene now is developing extremely fast, new genres replace the ones which were popular yesterday. However, from our sight music scene is being suffering ailment for the past decade. We can define two correlated symptoms of it. The first one comes from the fact that technologies now give musicians cheap and simple solutions to make decent recordings and promote them globally. And Your Screaming Silence is no exception here. This makes music market overfilled with content. As we know, supply growth leads to value reduction, and this is what happens now with music in general. The second symptom is that music is losing its independency. Today music is perceived pretty much as an application for any visual content: movie, video game, product presentation etc. Even live concerts tend more to be more a visual show rather than just music performance. This is the present state of music scene and any band has to deal with it to succeed.
How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
-We did tour to several cities in Russia, it was an unforgettable experience! Traveling with a band lets you feel the true romance of life of a rock star and deepen your relationship within the band. We were always lucky as we met a lot of positive and kind people, both our fans and gig managers, we are very grateful for their warm reception. We are sure that most part of our shows both in Russia and abroad are still to come, and we are looking forward to touring in some European cities in the summer of 2019!
What will the future bring?
-We are preparing our first headline show in December, thus planning to release 2 new singles, followed by a live video. Next summer we want to play at some local and European festivals.
