Alice Cooper – “Welcome To My Nightmare 2”

Few in the rock world don’t know who Alice Cooper is: his career spans the best part of 4 decades and he is arguably the originator of the ‘shock’ rock genre. This year,he was honored with both the Kerrang! Icon Award in the U.K. and the Revolver Golden God Award in the U.S. In 1975, AC released “Welcome To My Nightmare”, a landmark album for several reasons: it was a concept album under which he legally took what was prior the band’s name i.e. Alice Cooper; the album went multi-platinum thanks to the hit ‘Only Women Bleed’; its success marked the start of his solo career and a collaboration with producer Bob Ezrin. More than 35 years later, Alice and Ezrin have resurrected the horror and humor for a new generation, where the sequel picks up right where they left off, with Alice trapped in his own warped mind! Even musically, AC has effectively recreated that original 70s sound, like on ‘When Hell Comes Home’ complete with vibrato guitar and a dark, brooding vibe. But “..Nightmare 2” is no mere re-rash and AC proves it on his duet with rapper Kesha (WTF?!) on the electro rock ‘What Baby Wants’ which seems almost tailor made for radio airplay! Elsewhere, the disco pastiche of ‘Disco Bloodbath Boogie’ with AC rapping his satire is perhaps questionably outdated (does anyone even say ‘disco’ nowadays?) but it soon gives way to a full on metal power trip before you can even think about it LOL. And if that wasn’t enough, the (alternate) surf pop of ‘Ghouls Gone Wild’, (featuring Mark Volman from the Turtles and Flo and Eddie) will either have you in nostalgia, or screaming like you did at Alice 40 years ago LOL. I guess if there’s one flaw then I would it say that while all 14 tracks (17 in the deluxe version featuring 2 live tracks and a cover of The Animal’s ‘We Gotta Get Outta This Place’) are worthy as successors to the original namesake, none stand out as being hits. But hey, it’s not as if he needs one, cos everyone knows who Alice Cooper is dontcha?!!
