Andi Deris – “Million Dollar Haircuts On Ten Cent Heads” (earMusic)
It’s been a busy year for Helloween and Pink Cream 69 vocalist Andi Deris: not only have the happy Helloweeners released their 14th album but coincidentally, it’s also been 14 years since Andi released any solo material. Bursting back with a literal vengeance, Deris has found his inspiration in the fallout from the global financial crisis and he’s pulling no punches on this one. Don’t be expecting anything happy clappy – the title sez it all – this is hard rock with an attitude and a simple message to the self appointed elite – fuck the bankers! Explicit, in your face and brimming with rebellion, I’ve never heard Deris like this but high energy rockers like ‘Bankers Delight (Dead Or Alive)’ and the jaw dropping mutha of ‘Cock’ say it all and shout out the anger of millions. Still, Deris does more than just rant but also offers poignant introspection in the nu metal ‘Will We Ever Change’ and also hope in the anthemic ‘Don’t Listen To The Radio’ – based on HG Well’s ‘War Of The Worlds’ no less, where mankind faces the end, but somehow, someway pulls through. And that’s I read this superb album from this highly talented vocalist, who at one stage was a heart attack risk, but instead has come back fighting. With local Tenerife talent The Bad Bankers at his side, Deris has delivered a balls out, rock out album that clearly shows a different kick ass side to his personality – and I like it!
