Angerot – “The Splendid Iniquity” (Black Market Metal)
If you wallow in the dirt and decay of early 90s Swe-deth a la Entombed, Dismember and Grave then you’re gonna love these guys – even if they’re from South Dakota! Clearly fans of this cult genre themselves, Angerot have got Entombed’s LG Petrov and James Murphy (Death, Cancer, Disincarnate, Obituary, Testament) guesting, not to mention an elite production team in Tomas Skogsberg (Entombed, Dismember, Carnage, Grave, At the Gates) mixing at Sunlight Studios and mastering by Brad Boatright at AudioSeige to get that authentic sound perfect. As such “The Splendid Iniquity” is a top offering and as a debut, clearly shows Angerot’s ambition which is matched by their musicianship. From the trademark filthy Boss HM-2 guitars, growling vocals and distorted bass, there’s plenty of whirring death riffola as well as a few US metal touches to make the 10 splendid tracks here reek of pure Swe-deth just like back in the day. Blasting in with cymbal frenzy on ‘Eternal Unrest’ the Swe-deth groove and those dirty hammering guitars are just instant possession while on ‘Rivers Of Chaos’, the buzzsaw bliss also incorporates some cool lead melodies (all dark of course) along with a very catchy chorus, showing the measure of Angerot’s composing even at this early stage in their careers. In proving that even more is the slower ‘They Wake At Dust’ with its powerful acoustic guitar contrasting superbly with the menacing background guitar, along with some very classy death metal melodies on what is a short 2 minute track, but doesn’t hold back whatsoever in its immensity of emotion. A highly impressive debut indeed!
