Arcadea – “Arcadea”

Arcadea – “Arcadea” (Relapse)

Battle Helm Rating

Oh wow, this is how space rock should sound – hit the warp speed Mr Scott! A funky prog power trio made up of drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor (Mastodon), guitarist/keyboardist Core Atoms (Zruda, Gaylord) and keyboardist/guitarist Raheem Amlani (Withered, Scarab), this self titled debut isn’t some trans dimensional abstract trip through the cosmos, but instead an intense experience through the light fantastic propelled by the incredible music of these space wizards! Appealing as much to techno geeks as possessed hippies, the hyper speed ‘Rings Of Saturn’ blends the amazing keyboard grooves of Amlani which just bounce around your head and possessing you to funk out to the frantic rhythmic beat of Dailor with only the flower power harmonies offering mild relief to your overloading heart beat! Elsewhere, like on ‘Electromagnetic’, it’s Dailor’s fast technical drum work that drives the sound with plenty of emo melodies from the coolly named Core Atoms superbly contrasted by some pulsating, phat space sounds from Amlani. Approaching street rap levels of rhythmic beat, ‘Motion Of Planets’ highlights once again the amazing keyboard work here that dazzles stratospherically while simultaneously injects a heavy dance beat that’s truly difficult to resist. This is an awesome album that really shows the potential of keyboard mastery, not in drawn out grandiosity but in super catchy songs that have all the captivating lure of a black hole’s event horizon! Simply mind blowing.
