Blues Pills – “Lady In Gold” (Nuclear Blast Records)

Battle Helm Rating

Oh man, how groovy is this album! If you’re a fan of psychedelic blues rock n soul a la Janis Joplin then this 2nd studio album by this Swedish quartet will no doubt blow your mind. Already captivating many with their namesake debut a coupla years back, “Lady In Gold” sees the band sex and funk up this sophomore to the max! Elin Larsson’s vocals already had plenty of sensuality and feminine soul but on ‘Little Boy Preacher’ she now adds in an almost Motown element, unleashing her own power sounding like Aretha Franklin amid wailing femme gospel harmonies – amazing! That said, Blues Pills haven’t abandoned the late ‘60s / early ‘70s blues rock of the first record, with ‘Burned Out’ taking on swamp rock proportions thanks to Dorian Sorriaux’s talented slide guitar and ‘You Gotta Try’ really showing off Zach Anderson’s slapping bass and funk sass with Larsson’s sultriness once again. It all culminates brilliantly in my favorite track – ‘Won’t Go Back’ – that brings together all these winning elements along with some dirty psych guitar from Sorriaux in a more upbeat tempo that had me shakin’ and jumping all over the place! “Lady In Gold” sees Blues Pills on a roll with this release – it is just so unbelievably sexy.
