Battle Helm Rating

Canadian Progressive Death/Black Metal. With influences ranging from Rush to Al Di Meola to Mayhem and supports to Bison BC, Minsk and Cult of Luna, Vancouver’s Bushwhacker might be one of the most eclectic bands to arrive this year – with songs ranging from one minute to over seven minutes plus – but arrive they have with this jaw dropping debut! Reflecting the stark wilderness and mountainous landscapes of their Yukon homeland, Bushwhacker in eight, long cold years from their high school days have been refining and honing a sound that brings together diversity through a flowing soundscape incorporating a technicolor of sounds that will have you in wonder both in recognition of familiar styles but also how it all comes together so smoothly! From prog percussive rhythms to hoarse / growl vocals to technical drumming to dexterous psychedelic breaks and stunning solos, prepare to be transfixed to the rip roaring ‘Dead Man’s Waltz’ while basking in the natural tranquility of ‘Cheewhat Giant‘ before succumbing to the monster power groove slide meets jazz fusion of ‘Shikadance’. While there are many eclectic bands out there, few have held my attention for the duration as Bushwhacker have done in “The False Dilema”. If you’re looking for something different yet still within familiar waters then I’d highly recommend this highly talented musical quartet. Someone please sign these guys!
