Channel Zero – “Kill All Kings” (Metal Blade Records)
Probably best known for being Belgium’s premier metal band, Channel Zero formed in the 90s and released 4 albums, enjoying success by playing pretty much all the big Euro festivals and touring across the Continent with the likes of Megadeth, Danzig, and Biohazard. Yet despite all of this, they folded when various members decided to move onto different solo projects. However, the Belgian fans didn’t forget them and after a decade of increasing demands, Channel Zero once again reformed to play 6 reunion shows to 12,000 people which sold out in under an hour. Their resurgence continued with the band headlining the renowned Graspop and Rock Werchter festivals and following that, their comeback album “Feed ‘Em With A Brick” produced by Logan Mader. With more festival shows at Wacken, Hellfest and 70,000 Tons Of Metal, Channel Zero were to all intents and purposes back – until the tragic passing of founder drummer Phil Baheux last year who was honored by the band in an acoustic set at the Brussels Summer Festival. Despite their significant loss, the band have continued with Roy Mayorga (Stone Sour, Soulfly) in commemorating Phil B’s worthy legacy on drums during the studio recordings for this album. Musically, these guys are a meat n potatoes band taking inspiration from 90s metal godz like Pantera, Metallica and Machine Head with their no frills monster riffing courtesy of Mikey Doling’s squeakin’ n crunching guitars, along with Mayorga’s hard hitting drum work. Franky DSVD’s mixture of English n French vocals are delivered hoarsely to match, allowing songs like ‘Burn The Nation’, ‘Dark Passenger’ and ‘ Duisternis‘ to effortlessly glide from groove to thrash to extreme in delivering what Channel Zero have been doing best all these years – metal to the max!!!
