Chelsea Grin – “Ashes To Ashes” (Artery Recordings / Razor & Tie)
Melodic deathcore from Salt Lake City, UT! Now onto their 3rd album after a 3 year wait, Chelsea Grin are one of the most happening bands coming out’ve the US right now, a phenom that has been since 2011’s “My Damnation” landed in the Billboard Top 100 followed by 2012’s EP “Evolve” going to #4 on the Hard Music Chart. Revolver dubbed them a “Band To Watch” and Alternative Press showcased the group as part of “AP Recommends”, while they became voted #2 in their Readers Chart. 2014 sees them once again join the Vans Warped Tour just in time for the release of “Ashes To Ashes” and it’s to easy why they’re so popular cos they’re so damn catchy! While Chelsea Grin do have a brutal back end and founder vocalist Alex Koehler definitely sings with alternating roars n screeching screamo, there’s an incredible amount of melody coming outta the guitars along with keyboard samples that add harmonious backing along with tranquil elements to the material. Most of all though, there’s a definite groove to songs like ‘Cheers To Us’, ‘Angels Shall Sin, Demons Shall Pray’ and ‘Dust To Dust’, at times incorporating chopping djent grooves whilst during others dance beats that come together in one incredibly catchy rhythm. For a band still in their early 20s “Ashes To Ashes” shows an incredible amount of maturity as well as the culmination of their experience that’s been going since 2007 resonating in the 15 tracks therein clocking in total to around an hour – not sure how many deathcore bands have achieved this but it’s definitely not a feature of the genre! Despite the abundant melodies the lyrics don’t hold back in dealing with the harsh realities of life like drugs, alcoholism and bullying, although Chelsea Grin put a positive spin on things, encouraging people to stand up for themselves in knowing they are not alone from a band that has trodden that path before them.
