Cultural Warfare – “Future Kill” EP (M-Theory)
Metallica, Exodus, Death Angel, Testament, Forbidden, and Vio-lence. All bands synonymous with the legendary Bay Area Thrash scene. Cultural Warfare is 4 seasoned musicians with one common goal – to continue that underground legacy. Made up of mainstays Kevin Doughty (drums) and guitarist Billy Garoutte, the band are now joined by bassist Pete Aguilar (ex-Desecrater, ex-Taunted) and vocalist Jaques Serrano (Taunted, ex-Split Image, ex-System of Pain, ex-Annihilation). Having already released their “Ratten Krieg” EP in 2012, this intense 5 tracker is the further proof that the Bay Area scene is indeed alive and well, with no sign whatsoever of wimping out! With all 4 members having long standing roots, Cultural Warfare aren’t a band of young band of pretenders and that explains the authentic sound, which if I had to associate it with any of the aforementioned names would certainly draw closer comparisons to Forbidden. Garoutte’s chopping thrash riffs mixed with just the right amount of whirring melodies immediately brings to mind memories of the early days, as does his technicality with plenty of wailing solos and neo classical fret board work. Serrano’s equally versatile vocals shows he’s more than capable of handling screaming highs, along with a gruffer approach and Doughty brings up the rear excellently with plenty of rampaging double bass speed runs. Still, the maturity of the guys ensures this isn’t just a speed trip, but more of bringing in all of the best of those bands as these guys – and us – grew up to in songs like ‘Defy The Blade’, ‘Our Dead Earth’ and ‘The Damned’. Completed with hoarse shout outs and a class A team backing them in producer Juan Urteaga (Testament, Exodus, Vicious Rumors), Maor Appelbaum (Faith No More, Halford, Sepultura) on mastering and Brian Lewis (DevilDriver, Black Label Society) handling the artwork, you know that something big is definitely stirring in the Bay Area once again – and Cultural Warfare is its name.
