Denial Of God – “The Shapeless Mass” MCD (Osmose Productions / Hells Headbangers)
Battle Helm Rating
Formed by the brothers Ustumallagam (vocals) and Azter (guitar) who are both still part of the band’s line-up today, Denial Of God began in 1991 and is one of the longest continuously running Danish metal bands of all time! Playing horror black metal inspired by Mercyful Fate, Death SS and Venom, this renowned trio (completed by drummer Galheim) are now back after 7 years with this mini release made up of a new track, a re-recording of 1995’s ‘The Statues Are Watching’, along with covers of Bathory’s ‘Call From The Grave’ and ‘Mama Loi, Papa Loi’ by Caribbean psychedelic folk band Exuma!!! Fortified by close to 3 decades dedicated to their cause, which by all accounts has remained steadfast throughout, Denial Of God also have plenty of epic and heavy metal influences adding even more weight to their classy sound, and it’s reflected in their sterling covers proving their talent once more in being able to handle such a diverse range of acts through commendably moulding the original song structures to fit into their own extreme style. Likewise, they do fine justice in resurrecting the title track from their 1995 debut vinyl 7″, adding even more ferocity to this already fast number while really bringing out the catchy, nihilistic punk thrash grooves this time, made all the more stirring thanks to the modern production! At just over 9 minutes, new track ‘The Shapeless Mass’ blends in even more epic power, building slowly but majestically through its catchy melodies and military drum beats before hitting the speed of fast but melodic riffing while Ustumallagam’s grim drawls pervade, occasionally slowed by a grand epic passage before returning to the furore on this incredible piece – a mere foretaste of what is to come from the awesome might of Denial Of God!!!
