Jackson Firebird – “Cock Rockin'” (Napalm Records)

Mildura is about a remote enough country town in outback Australia. Sorta place with one bar, tumbleweed, a river fulla crocs and a zillion flies. It’s also home to Brendan Harvey (Guitar & Vocals) and Dale Hudak (Drums, Bottle Bin & Vocals) aka Jackson Firebird, named after Brendan’s first ‘bogan’ guitar. There’s certainly plenty to laugh at (or wince if you’re an Aussie – Ed) from the whole white trash, hicks ville look – and Harvey n Hudak don’t seem any wiser to care – to the cheesy 70s album cover, not to mention that title. But that’s where it ends. Flip this baby on and that guitar breathes like Angus Young backed solid with a wall of Marshalls. Deep, brooding and honest, I swear it’s humming like a beast possessed when Harvey ain’t even touching it! Speaking of wart hogs and the like, let’s talk about Dale, little bugger’s been banging on tins and boxes since he was a kid so his drumming speaks for itself: solid, honest and hard! Do they need a bass player – probably tried once but given how much reverbs comin outta Harvey’s SG and Hudak’s kit smashing, there’s probably no need for some tosser to be standing in the way of the music. Speaking of music, it’s hard drinking Aussie country pub rock – certainly plenty of AC/DC, but also some Allman Brothers – all revved up with plenty of gusto and spunk on songs like ‘Little Missy’ and ‘Red Hair Honey’. When the lads finally spaz out it’s on the funk rap rock n roll of ‘Quan Dang’ which is like Rage Against The Machine with Angus Young on guitar. Bongo bogans or just talented country youth giving it you straight up I don’t care cos “Cock Rockin'” just does exactly that – and I dare ANY bar to say otherwise!
