Liquid Graveyard – “By Nature So Perverse” (Sleaszy Rider Records)
With names such as John Walker (Cancer), Shane Embury (Napalm Death, Brujeria, Lock Up) and Nick Barker (Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth) enlisted for this 3rd album, Liquid Graveyard has evolved from its beginnings in 2006 to a veritable super group. Completing the death / grind quartet is vocalist Raquel Walker who does a remarkable job in her range from trademark guttural to a black / death hoarse mix. With Barker’s furious drumming driving the band and Shane Embury adding to the scything heaviness with his bass, Jeff Walker really has found a pedigree line up to bring out the avant garde style of Liquid Graveyard beyond its expected death / grind leanings. On ‘All Bile All Vile’ there’s a distinctly old Celtic Frost style while ‘Okalo’ reminded me of Obituary’s groove along with a constant mid tempo Donald Tardy double bass beat. Walker’s own guitar remains heavy n raw, perfectly complementing the tone of each track and on the likes of ‘The Opportunist’ he draws out some very progressive melodies, to which Raquel adds her own trippy vocals. Equally throughout the album you’ll hear elements of doom and blackened death, and Brad Boatright (Obituary, Nails) has done an excellent job mastering the sound to bring out a strong live feel to this album, possessed of savage power yet also impressive finesse and definitely reflective of its veteran presence!
