Magrudergrind – “II”

Magrudergrind – “II” (Relapse Records)

Battle Helm Rating

Raucous punk / grind from DC and now Brooklyn legends Magrudergrind! Returning after a 6-year hiatus with much retribution in a new album and Euro tour to boot, this megaton trio continue to burn in a wake that began in 2007 seeing them gig across North and South America, Europe and Asia alongside Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death as well as playing Hellfest, Obscene Extreme and the Maryland Deathfest. Monster punk as fuck riffs played through scum sound guitar, roughly hewn bass, manic drums and of course, Avi Kulawy’s throat shredded vocals deliver the goods across 15 mean n nasty tracks as they did on their 2007 self titled debut. As scathing lyrically to match their abrasive musical onslaught on tracks that leave nothing to the imagination such as ‘Hara Kiri’ (pretty obvious), ‘Unit 731′ (named after the infamous WWII Japanese human experiment unit) and ‘Husayni-Handschar‘ (presumably referring to the Mufti of Jerusalem and the muslim 13th Waffen SS Division), what makes Magrudergrind such a massacre is not their obvious savagery but a definite intelligence in how they arrange their material to be extreme and yet astoundingly catchy – quite a feat that has no doubt endeared the likes of Kurt Ballou (Converge, High On fire), Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Phobia) and Brad Boatright (Obituary, Nails) to work with them. That said the cover of a black street guy wielding a baseball bat in a dirty subway brings back all the distasteful 80s memories of Bernhard Goetz….
