Metal Allegiance – “Fallen Heroes” EP (Nuclear Blast Records)
When some of your greatest heroes fall in succession, there’s only one way you can see them out – and that’s to sing ’em out! With Lemmy, Bowie and the Eagles Glenn Frey all passing pretty much in succession, Metal Allegiance, a collective of musicians centered around bassist David Ellefson (Megadeth), drummer Mike Portnoy (Winery Dogs), guitarist Alex Skolnick (Testament) and brainchild Mark Menghi decided it was time to toast out these legends in fine style. Never shy of guests, this time around they’ve got Mastodon’s Troy Sanders roaring on a searing rendition of Motorhead’s ‘Iron Fist’, Death Angel’s Mark Osegueda on a suitably suave n funky take on ‘Suffragette City’, and Alissa White-Gluz wailing on ‘Life In The Fast Lane’, complemented by Alex Skolnick’s flashy slide guitar work. With all the musicians personally grieved – in some cases hearing the news while on stage playing live – they’ve done the right thing by taking their sadness and translating it into searing performances respectful of those who inspired them. A righteous release indeed.
