Michael Schenker – “On A Mission: Live In Madrid”

Michael Schenker – “On A Mission: Live In Madrid” 2CD / DVD / Blu-ray (inakustik)

Battle Helm Rating

Wow, I knew Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock were on a roll with their recent “Spirit On A Mission” release, but this live DVD not only proves they can shake it in the grooves, but also live in front of a rabid audience! Filmed at Madrid’s Joy Eslava Theatre on last year’s European tour, I can see why this venue was handpicked by Michael himself, being a historical 3 story theater with excellent acoustics, but moreover allowing the band to be really up close and personal with their fans. Right from the roar to ‘Doctor Doctor’ its clear that vocalist Doogie White has some competition with the singing crowd, and that energy is reflected in Herman Rarebell’s pounding drum work, not to mention Francis Buchholz and Schenker getting right to the front of the stage, playing into the fans and racing back and forth across the stage. Everybody is smiling and if I wasn’t crying tears of joy to see Michael Schenker back to his legendary fine form I’d be doing the same to MSG classics like ‘Attack Of The Mad Axeman’. Thanks to the abundant 4K technology cameras and extra microphones for the Dolby Atmos 3D mix there is plenty of up close footage especially during Michael’s fret board work, and the sound is nothing short of incredible, matching the note for note perfect performance of these veterans. Best of all, with such names in Temple of Rock the 22 tracks cover songs from all their great bands from the Scorpions ‘Coast To Coast’, where the guitar melodies of Schenker twinned with guitarist / keyboardist Wayne Findley exude passion and soul through the crystal clarity mix of UFO’s ‘Rock Bottom’, where Schenker’s virtuoso performance reminds us why he was chosen to become UFO’s guitarist aged just 17 years old! With a blistering ‘Blackout’ bringing the carnage to a close with Schenker, Buchholz and Findley rocking it out trio style at the front once more, kudos once again goes to the Spanish crowd roaring out the chorus, arms aloft air punching, much to the emotional smiles of the legendary rockers on stage. A truly special performance captured on this excellent DVD making Michael Schenker once again on my must see live list.
