Monster Jaw – “Get A Tattoo” EP (Cobra Kitten Records)
Grunge punk indie from the gritty northern cities of Leeds, Bradford and Newcastle in the UK! If you’re a fan of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and The Pixies then Monster Jaw are walking in the same alleys as you. Despite only being an EP, tracks like ‘Get A Tattoo’ do the business in showcasing a band that has all the classic shoegaze and indie sounds from the late 80s / early 90s be it in the fuzz tinged guitar meets hypnotic stoner vox of the title track to the off the wall lyrics meets addictive choruses and culminating raw aggression that Frank Black first invoked all to those years ago on ‘We Don’t Care About Anything’ to the blurring monotone of ‘Summer Girl’. Centered around charismatic frontman songwriter Mik Davis, Monster Jaw don’t really do anything I haven’t heard before, but what they do is take the best that I’ve previously heard and roll it all together in a somewhat more melancholic and definitely heavier sound than their legendary predecessors. This EP certainly garnered my interest in Monster Jaw and given I’ve still got their songs floating around my head a few days later that can’t be a bad thing.
