Monte Pittman – “Inverted Grasp of Balance”

Monte Pittman – “Inverted Grasp of Balance” (Metal Blade Records)

Battle Helm Rating

Wow – if you like heavy assed, molten metal then this is for you! While being a well recognized name having collaborated with Madonna and Prong, I never thought Monte Pittman this shredding?! But then again, on “Inverted Grasp of Balance” he does have not one, but two extreme metallers in legendary virtuoso bassist Billy Sheehan (Talas, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Niacin, The Winery Dogs) and powerhouse drummer Richard Christy (Charred Walls Of The Damned, Iced Earth, Death). Needless to say that packs quite a punch, in fact, a solid left / right! As such, Pittman’s own guitar has down toned into a maelstrom of dark n heavy sounds to match his heavyweight peers, along with complementary production by Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Steel Panther). That said, given the pedigree of all involved, don’t be expecting some mindless foray of musical aggression but rather a precise and controlled execution of devastating modern metal that is both irresistibly heavy and ball grabbing on songs like ‘Arisen in Broad Daylight‘, ‘The Times Are Changing‘ and ‘Pride Comes Before the Fall‘. Moreover, Pittman’s own vocals, being clean and soulful, seem to be antithetical to what’s offer here, yet strangely they add the very contrasting melody needed to bring out the beast in this excellent material! Whether slow or fast, the 12 tracks here exude a connoisseurs blend of killer metal riffs, blistering leads and gigantic hooks that were pure pleasure whether listening comfortably or spazzing out in a headbanging frenzy!!!
