More Than a Thousand – “Vol. 5 – Lost At Home” (Steamhammer / SPV)
Now back in their native Portugal, More Than a Thousand have learned a thing or two in the decade they lived in London, as well as recording in the USA and Sweden. Mixing catchy metal core with pop harmonies amidst Vasco Ramos’s aggro vocals and Filipe Oliveira’s dervish like guitar work, More Than a Thousand have a very commercial sound which is no bad thing especially if you’re wanting to break out’ve a small corner of Europe. With strong choruses promoting shout outs and air punching melodies there’s a definite power groove to songs like ‘Fight Your Demons’, ‘Dear Friend’ and ‘Never Let Go’. Formed in late 2001 the band already released 4 full length albums and gained a lot of popularity due to the fact that they did several tours all over Europe as a headliner and supported major acts like Metallica, Mastodon, Papa Roach, and Incubus amongst many others. “Vol. 5..”, is a fine album for what it is, although I can see some people moaning that all the 13 songs sound pretty much of a muchness but if you’ve got a winning formula – and these guys have – then why fuck with it?
