Mother´s Finest – “Goody 2 Shoes & The Filthy Beasts” (Steamhammer / SPV)

Continuing on from the “Shut Up” teaser released a few months back comes the full blown funky ass n sass album from 70s funk rockers Mother´s Finest. This is the band’s first studio recording since their 2003 release “Meta-Funk’n-Physical” but it’s like everything is just simply timeless for these inductees into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Oldsters they may be, but ‘old’ the grooves n licks simply ain’t thanks to Joyce “Babyjean” Kennedy’s power larynx and the soul brother slickness of counter part throat in Glenn “Doc” Murdock, both of whom are still going strong. Alongside come the street rhythms and cool shades of blues from the twin guitars of Gary “Mo” Moore and John Hayes on songs like the dark, sex rock of ‘She Ready’ or the anthemic ‘My Badd’ and the full force ‘Take Control’ which all seem to have a life of their own, formed by a creative fire n energy that comes from a rockin n shaking crew that’s been together for over 40 years. This interaction simply cannot be replicated and the way these guys – not forgetting Wyzard’s bass slapping and Dion’s drums – roll n move together is what makes them the pioneers of funk rock, effortlessly moving in between two distinct styles thought taboo of one another, yet in perfect harmony when played by the aptly named Mother’s Finest – just check out the live closing medley of their own ‘Illusion’ moving so coolly into The Rolling Stones ‘Satisfaction’ and then into Stepping Wolf’s ‘Born To Be Wild’ – all given that special touch thanks to “Babyjean” vocals – man, she is one hot black mama!! Over the years we’ve seen bands like Living Colour, Extreme and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers funk it up but compared to Mother´s Finest all I can say is ‘get the funk out’ cos these guys are the real deal, original crew – and southern fried!!!
