“Five Scars”
(LifeForce Records)
Night In Gales is a band I’ve been aware of for a very long time, since their first record, that I haven’t bothered to check out. At least I don’t think so. I can’t remember ever having heard a full album by them before this new one. A comeback of sorts seeing as it was ten years since their last one. Night In Gales can best be described as melodic death metal. Night In Gales might be Germans but they have always had more in common with the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound than any other death metal sound. That hasn’t changed. They sound like a cross between At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity. Nothing wrong with that. I don’t know how well they will fare this time around having been away for so long but judging by the sound of “Five Scars” (not that the album’s bad – it is a really good melodeath release) they’ll have to fight hard to get back what they’ve lost. Too bad that they lost that momentum because Night In Gales could have been one of the greatest melodeath bands outside of Gothenburg. Anders Ekdahl
