Raven – “Screaming Murder Death From Above: Live In Aalborg”

Raven – “Screaming Murder Death From Above: Live In Aalborg” (Steamhammer / SPV)
Battle Helm Rating
Gotta hand it to these Gallagher brothers, they’ve handled everything from crushed legs to now heart attacks given the sad departure from music of longtime drummer Joe Hasselvander. Still, it’s all water off a ducks back for these two, who’ve soldiered right from the days of NWOBHM through thrash n grunge to remain a name, nay legends in their own right to those appreciative of their never say die Geordie attitude and moreover, live shows that are so intense that in the 1980s justified a genre classification all  to themselves – athletic rock. “Screaming Murder Death From Above: Live In Aalborg” tells it all from the title, yet another nitrous fuelled Raven record resplendent with metal, madness and mayhem as it was back then and still remains to this day! Joining the brothers in this 11 track sweaty blitz is new drummer Mike Heller (Fear Factory, Malignancy), who seems to have found the perfect medium to not only showcase his bountiful energy through relentless amounts of double bass drumming, but equally a freedom to go absolutely mental much to the glee of the Gallaghers ha ha! Instantaneously recognisable through the trademark sound of Mark’s raw telecaster to John’s shrilling vocals and wild, tremolo assisted bass runs, “Screaming Murder Death From Above: Live In Aalborg” impresses by its sheer range of classics from ‘Hung, Drawn & Quartered’ to ‘Faster Than The Speed Of Light’ to ‘Crash Bang Wallop’, so anyone over the years who remembers Raven is gonna love this. Even more impressive is their skilled ability to match all that intensity with precision and technicality in maintaining an ultra tight performance throughout the set, giving me the impression of a desire to surpass their previous live releases in “Live – At The Inferno” in 1984 and “Destroy All Monsters” in 1996 – which they do in abundance I might add. Short, sharp and definitely shocking, this live release proves the pack is definitely back!!!
