Rush – “2112 – 40th Anniversary”

Rush – “2112 – 40th Anniversary” 2CD / DVD (UMC)

Battle Helm Rating

Originally released in 1976, “2112” is the album widely regarded by both fans and Rush themselves to be their first commercial success but more importantly, set the defining sound which the band would use to go onto international success. Certified gold and soon after becoming platinum, “2112” is a staple in the collection of any hard rock and heavy metal fan’s collection – myself included – especially coming from the era of the 1970s and 80s. In celebrating its 40th anniversary, the band have released this 16 track expanded edition, which includes a full remastering by the famed Abbey Road Studios – along with an enticing mix of bonus material including live tracks, rare material and of course, a plethora of guests! The DVD is restored footage of a vintage 1976 concert recorded at the Capitol Theatre in New Jersey, along with bonus videos and a lengthy interview with Alex Lifeson. The live tracks off the CDs are a mixture of outtakes taken from the band’s equally famous “All The World’s A Stage” double live album recorded at Toronto’s Massey Hall in 1976 including a nearly full version of ‘2112’, while for trivia fans there is a rediscovered 1977 live version of ‘The Twilight Zone’ – a song that has only been performed twice in Rush’s history! On top of it all, there’s superb performances by Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters on their version of ‘Overture’, Alice In Chains on ‘Tears’, Brit progster Steve Wilson on ‘The Twilight Zone’ and a simply ripping cover of ‘A Passage to Bangkok’ by Billy Talent, who do true justice and a whole lot more to one of my fave Rush tracks – great work boys! Along with extensive liner notes this anniversary special is also available in vinyl LP and Super DeLuxe versions making this a celebration as epic as the band’s legendary songs themselves!!
