Maybe it’s me who is thicker than wood but lately all new Norwegian black metal sounds like the same old tried and tested. It’s all re-puked Dimmu Borgir, Emperor and Darkthrone stuff. Nothing new and invigorating. Saligial is another Norwegian black metal band that has that all new classical Norwegian black metal sound going for them. It’s not that I don’t like it. I can listen to this kind of Norwegian black metal and enjoy it. It’s just that what once was at the edge of cutting throat has now become the standard format. “Sic Transit Gloria Mundi” is not as bad as I might have let on. Dig deeper into it and you’ll find a black metal record steeped in a tradition so good that you’d be hard to fail even if you tried. Anders Ekdahl
