Sebastian Bach – “Give ‘Em Hell” (Frontiers Records)
The Bach is back! Having sold in excess of 20 million records worldwide as lead singer with his former band, Skid Row, Seb is back with his 5th solo album – and ready to take on the world again despite being in his mid 40s. Assembling a stellar cast to partake in his conquest, his legendary reputation has found no less than Duff McKagan (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N’ ROSES), John 5 (MARILYN MANSON, ROB ZOMBIE), Steve Stevens (BILLY IDOL), Devin Bronson (AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK) and Bobby Jarzombek (HALFORD, RIOT, FATES WARNING) on drums! The million dollar question for me is that despite leaving Skid Row, Bach has never really gotten outta their shadow – perhaps intentionally – and on this album he actually moves closer to them in going for that kick ass hard rock with an attitude style even comparing this album to the great “Slave To The Grind”! Tall words certainly, but then he always did have a big gob, but does he pull it off? Certainly songs like ‘All My Friends Are Dead’ and ‘Push Away’ definitely have that brooding heavy vibe that gave Skid Row a hard edge that appealed to headbangers like me along with rockin’ road ballads like ‘Had Enough’, full of youth appeal for any rebellious heart! The remainder of the material is near enough hard rock in Skid Rows style mixing ass kickers with crooners and anthems whilst the delivery is second to none, reflective of the star cast. Bach’s own voice is still in fine form too, but does it trounce Skid Row classics – probably not – but neither does their newer material to be fair. Mebbe they should stop trying to outdo each other and just concentrate on overcoming the insurmountable task of getting back together instead lol.
