I remember buying THUS DEFILED’S debut CD way back in the day. I still got it in my collection. But I haven’t really kept up with them since that album so this is like a reconnection. This is not a new album but a collection of cover tracks with one new original track. I am not a big fan of covers so it is with some trepidation that I take this one on. THUS DEFILED has decided to do covers of Metallica, Death, Morbid Angel and WASP. A bold choice one might think. Let’s see how bold a choice it really is. What hit me first was how much this made me think of Sex Pistols mixed with Mötley Crüe. Not the black metal sound that I had expected. The new THUS DEFILED track made me think of Mötley’s “Red Hot”. A strange thought in deed. “Creeping Death” is a classic Metallica track and one of my all time fave. I love Morbid Angel and Death. I also really like early WASP. To hear these tracks with the THUS DEFILED touch will be interesting. I gotta say that THUS DEFILED has managed to take the classic Metallica song and turn it into something more aggressive. You can still hear that it is the classic track but it has been given a new polish. Morbid Angel in a black metal sound? I am not too sure about that. I love Morbid Angel but “Demon Seed” does not fit in this costume. To take on Death’s signature song “Evil Dead” is a major task. As a diehard Death fan done wrong it is a total failure, a sacrilege. This is borderline that. it doesn’t really live up to the original. The WASP track is like any WASP track perfect to transform into any sort of extreme metal. This one I really like. There is an aggressive edge to this that the song benefits from. My overall impression is that THUS DEFILED are so much more punk than I remember them to be. I really liked the new track and the covers were not too bad. Some did stand out more than the others. Overall a record that I would buy. Even though I am not that big of a cover fan. Anders Ekdahl
