Windhand – “Grief’s Infernal Flower”

Windhand – “Grief’s Infernal Flower” (Relapse Records)

Mindblowing. Windhand’s third full length could be heavy stoner / doom metal’s best album of 2015. Whilst this Richmond, VA band’s two prior releases established them firmly in the US doom underground, “Grief’s Infernal Flower” is set to break them hugely – and highly respectably – through the sheer song writing talent inherent in its grooves! Producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, High On Fire, Soundgarden) has done a superb job harnessing the massive power of this band without diminishing it, polishing the sound to allow songs like ‘Forest Clouds’, ‘Crypt Key’ and ‘Kingfisher’ to flow more smoothly but more importantly, allowing their bountiful dark melodies and hypnotic hippy harmonies to be brought to the fore. Through it all, one can appreciate the mesmerizing beauty of Dorthia Cottrell’s ethereal voice, a veritable siren perfectly poised in between the crushing twin titan power of the ultra heavy fuzzed guitars of Garrett Morris and Asechiah Bogdan! With little change to the rhythmic mastery of Parker Chandler’s colossal bass and seismic shock drummer Ryan Wolfe, Windhand’s mammoth backbone is proof that you can be as heavy as cement and still have the grace of an angel. Impressive, hugely impressive!
